about

"I've been enjoying Jay Peele's new FIVER'S STEREO "SYNTHETIC REALISM" CD. Over 6 tracks and about 36 minutes, Jay creates the background soundtrack to your favorite sci-fi flick, as well as providing a showcase for the joys of old time analog sounds. I'm stupid when it comes to keys/synths/effects brands but certainly noted Moog and Analog among Jay's gear list.
I like the blend of experimental music and old time Kraut/Prog sounds. Much of this would be ideal effects music in a Forbidden Planet remake. (Just kidding, I don't really want Hollywood to tarnish Forbidden Planet with a remake, but you get the idea.)
The music gradually develops, and I'm really diggin' the SOUNDS. Jay strikes a nice balance between cold/mechanical and hypnotically spaced out, and the singing bowels and cymbals add a nice touch of traditional sounds at times. The cymbals, for example, nicely embellish the mechanized syncopations on 'Clear'. I like the minimal tone melody surrounded by ghostly voices, atmospherics and oscillations (and birds chirping), on 'Reconnect'. And 'Channel' is one of my favorites, with its alien effects cavalcade and early 70s space-prog electronica vibe.
Well done Jay! I've given this several spins!"
